To help us out with this review we rounded up a guest reviewer and fellow mom to help out. Jenny Stewart is a mom of 4 kids ages 18 months to 7 years old and has much experience navigating the ins and outs of motherhood. We thought she’d be great to help test out the HEXBUG sets. If you’ve been curious about this new toy that your kids might be “bugging” you to get, we’ve tested and tried it out with our kids to see if all the hype is all it’s cracked up to be. Danielle (editor) – HEXBUG Nano Bridge Battle Habitat + Nano Spiral Starter Set

hexbug battleI was actually excited to test out and review this product as my kids have been asking about it for a while now. Out of the box I wouldn’t say the tracks would work well for kids aged 3 and 4 (the box states it’s for kids ages 3+). My 5 and 7 year old boys needed a fair bit of assistance initiallyand the instructions were vague but once they got the hang of building and setting up the tracks they were able to play independently and really had a lot of fun mixing things up and creating their own habitats and battle set ups. If you’re purchasing HEXBUG’s I wouldn’t do so without getting at least a basic track to keep them contained. They are really fast and move quick and when left to their own devices it didn’t take long for them to find the narrow gap between the bookcase and wall which took a bit to get them out. The kids thought it was hysterical and had fun racing and chasing after them.

The Bridge Battle Habitat was a big hit giving the boys a way to play together and have mini challenges. I have to admit, I was really skeptical about this product when it first arrived, thinking it a bit of a one-off type toy, but seeing the boys play with it we’re now on the hunt for more pieces and HEXBUG’s to grow their habitat. As a kid I had a snail “city” in the basement and I have to say this is a lot less messy (have no idea how my parents put up with that!). The real bugs are investigated and played with outdoors and this is a chance to have some insect like fun indoors.

Jenny (Guest Reviewer) – HEXBUG Nano Elevation Habitat

hexbug starterMy two oldest boys, who are 7 & almost 6, were super excited. My 3 year old was completely oblivious to what was going on. I love the idea of tech toys, but for some reason I never seem to buy them! Maybe it’s because I always thought my kids were too young? The HEXBUG’s are pretty darn cool. They are robotic bugs but really act like real ones. Honestly, I get kind of creeped out watching them move around! The habitat is awesome and could accommodate the entire HEXBUG collection. You can build it in multiple ways; it has a multi-level spiral and bridges that allow the HEXBUG’s to travel all through it. If they bump into the walls they just shimmy over to find a way out and if they flip over they turn right side up on their own.

The two older boys and I sat down on the living room floor I helped them get it out of the package but then left them to build it. The instructions were very vague. So after about 10 minutes of trying to figure them out, my 7 year old and I decided to just create our own track! Once I told him go for it he had a super creative track all built in about 15 minutes. The recommended age on the box says 3+, which my 3 year old is playing with it but I don’t think any 3 year old would be able to actually build the track them self. You need to be able to use a little force to pop them all together. A parent would have to build it and then the 3 year old would have no problems playing with it alone. Their Grandpa & Grandma came over the next day so the boys were excited to show them. They brought it out and set it all up again. The Grandparents loved it! Grandpa actually called it “brilliant” and Grandma got on the computer to Google it and see what else is out there. Now she wants to buy one for their house too.

In our view

We both agree, the HEXBUG habitats and tracks would be an awesome Christmas gift this year for any kids ages 5 and up (boy or girl). The individual HEXBUG’s would make awesome stocking stuffers too!

If HEXBUG’s are on your holiday list, we’ve found them at Walmart and Toys R Us and they’re actually 20% off this week at Toys R Us too! You can also check out their Facebook page and find them online at www.hexbug.com. Their website had some fun ideas for HEXBUG themed parties including games and recipes … we actually love the idea of a HEXBUG as a goody bag item too.
